Pipsqueak is complaining bitterly that I should be petting her rather than typing. This, from a cat who thinks that one should always take the time to eat the flowers.

Our handyman left us a wheelbarrow last week, so this morning I used it to cart off all the extra dirt from the previous excavation. Our woods now have a slightly higher layer of topsoil. Conveniently, right as I finished that, the exterminator showed up. He laid a layer of insecticide along the exterior of the house and said that the number of ants should decrease over the next two weeks, or he'd come out and do it again. (His work is guaranteed for 60 days.) He also said not to put anything down there any time soon, so I'm not going to rush about taking care of ground cover over there. I trimmed the enormous bush between our house and our next-door neighbors', and succeeded in digging out the last hosta. Karen's going to call Dalit to collect as much hosta as she wants for their yard (hopefully Dalit won't cut the cable the same way I did), and then I cleaned the floor in the foyer and the kitchen, to get rid of the dirt and collect any inside ants that were roaming around. Finally, I installed a new bell push for our doorbell, which had succumbed to the ravages of time. When I leave to go to work, I'll wash down the front steps, which have some topsoil on them from my expedition. That should cover a good chunk of what the homeowner's association wanted done. If that isn't all of it, it'll have to wait until the ants have died off. We also donated some stuff to Purple Heart, which may give us a tiny bit more space. As we go through things, we'll dig up some more junk to make go away.

Karen and I went to Lowe's last night, after I finished work. We'd like to put Pergo in the downstairs, which if you've seen our house, you know isn't a large area. I measured the spaces before; the kitchen is about 9' x 4', the dining room is 8' x 10', and the living room is 14' x 13'. This means that the area we need to cover is just less than 300 sq. feet. Lowe's doesn't match prices with Wood Floors Plus, so even though their colors aren't an exact match, we may go to WFP & see if they have a color that's close enough. WFP's prices are less than half of Lowe's or Home Depot. Lowe's also didn't have periwinkle for ground cover. Since the exterminator said not to disturb things if we could avoid it, and some of the hostas will be taken away, I'm not going to panic...despite the fact that Lowe's was the third place I'd been to that was out of periwinkle. The next step will be to try nursery stores directly, and that'll be via the phone book.

And now I should get ready for work. I'm in the IV Lab tonight, so if I get there early, I can leave early. Whoopie!
