Priorities, priorities

One of the first priorities here in the new house was making sure that the TV/stereo/DVD components all played nicely with each other so that we could watch movies. Karen rented "Mystic River" and "50 First Dates". We watched Mystic River late Saturday night, and watched 50 First Dates last night before she left on her business trip.

Mystic River was excellent. Acting, script, cinematography, directing. More than a little brutal, but it wasn't especially graphic, if you follow me. I can totally see why Sean Penn and Tim Robbins both received Academy Awards for their performances. We were also surprised to note that Clint Eastwood composed all the music, in addition to directing.

50 First Dates blew us away. It was hilarious, well acted, and touching. Both Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler did extremely well, and it wasn't as over-the-top as a lot of his movies...more "The Wedding Singer" than a bunch of his other stuff. (I usually enjoy his movies, but find the scripts uneven. This script had very few thin places.) I referred to the movie as "sort of a reverse Groundhog Day", and Karen replied that she'd never seen Groundhog Day. We'll have to fix that.

Hmm, I've been curious about Mystic River. I've read the book, which is quite good (though brutal). Eventually I guess I'll get around to seeing the movie ...

I haven't read the book, but I plan to (though I typically prefer to read a book before I see a movie...). I'm curious as to whether the ending in the book is the same as it was in the movie. I guess I'll find out.
