now I'm ticked

So, I'm downstairs, trying to set up a mail program so I can download my accumulated mail. I enjoyed using the mail program bundled with the Netscape browser on my other machine - it meant I didn't need to use any email software produced by Microsoft, which (last I checked) insisted on grabbing onto my email and not allowing me to do anything useful with it. I define "useful with it" as being able to save an email in a format other than a proprietary Microsoft format. There's this format called "text" which I've been fond of for some time. But I digress. I suppose it's not the end of the world if I don't have access to that...I haven't needed it in some time. Nevertheless, it irritates me that the current versions of Netscape (and their brothers Mozilla et al) no longer have mail readers. They instead, direct you to use Microsoft Outlook.

So, who uses a mail reader that works in a Windows machine that isn't a Microsoft product? Do you like what you use? Is it a free download?

Mozilla/Firefox has Thunderbird, which can be downloaded here. And yes, it's free.

Too late now. I had so much trouble getting this post to upload that I just gave in. *le sigh*

If you've already corrupted your mail with Outlook, all is not lost if you have the ability to write back to the IMAP server. Save your mail there, download with pine, move to whatever folders you like, and bask in the glow of virus-free, fast, text-based mail.

I was using Pine at work until our new corporate overlords mandated Outlook for all. My mail experience is much diminished. (My personal mail, however, is undamaged.)

(1) Re mail readers. I recommend Pegasus Mail. Nice and safe. See http://www.pmail.com/. I've been using it for years. Free download.

(2) I thought of you guys tonight. This month's Kashrus has an article on the O community of Silver Spring MD!

(3) Mozilla does have a mail reader in it. It is Firefox that doesn't.

With that I can even send anonymous mail! :)
