Jammin' Julian

I tend to listen to a particular genre of music on a fairly regular basis. I was driving Julian either to or from school a couple of days ago, and he started drumming along to the beat. It wasn't a very complicated beat, but he was doing more than just the main rhythm. I was impressed.

So, I asked, "Julian, do you like this song?"
"Yes." He paused, then asked, "What is this song about?"
I also paused and then said, "Happiness." I then also thought to myself, "...or the lack thereof..."

This morning, he did the same thing for another song. Something's telling me I need to get some children's CD's for the car...or expect to get more questions about the meanings of songs...

What he needs is a full-size drum set! With amplifimators!

Do you need suggestions for kids music that won't fry your brain?

That would be helpful. A friend of Karen's is going to get us copies of some of the They Might Be Giants kid DVDs, but it hasn't happened yet. I tend to spend 20 to 30 minutes in the car with Julian most days, and although he's not exactly repeating whatever I listen to, it would be better if more age-appropriate things were in his brain.

If he keeps asking about what things mean, expose him to George Carlin's repertoire.

I personally recommend Sesame Street Platinum (though I have
a few reservations about Elmo's more self-referential work).

What? What's so funny?

Kevin Clash is an awesome performer. And yet, every time I hear Elmo, I think he should suffer nodules on his vocal chords. I wish I wasn't so petty. Maybe I'll be lucky and he'll run over Barney and have to take time off to deal with the trial.
