Guilty as charged

Upon checking my email this morning, I found an email from my dad.

About 14 months ago he was arrested for 'brandishing a handgun'. Those of you who know my father will not be surprised at the possibility, although if you know him well you also know that he's never fired at anyone, ever. He had the trial yesterday, and was found guilty.

He'll be sentenced in about a month. He says the minimum jail time is 3 years.

Ouch. I'm sorry to hear this. How are you (and the rest of your family) handling it?

I also wonder about "brandishing". Is this just a fancy way of saying "displaying", or are they asserting that he actually threatened someone (assault)?

Re:
The guy who was towing my dad's car (Dad thought his car was being stolen, when the tow company had been called by his apartment complex because they were irritated with him) says that Dad pointed the gun at him. At his leg.

Dad's comment: "I would never aim at someone's leg. They taught me in the Army to hit the center of mass. If I was going to aim at him, I would aim at his chest. I had the gun pointed at the ground."

Yeah, it's basically assault.
