Perhaps *this* is the problem

Okay, all you geeks (who feel like helping) perhaps *this* is the problem!

Several months ago I lost the ability to use AIM and Netscrape and several other programs because they 'couldn't find the server'. I had been doing upgrades on several programs, and one of them did something that I couldn't undo to resolve the problem.

I just tried to add a LiveJournal client (LJ is doing odd things...it doesn't remember my login from one page to another, when it was doing so with no problems yesterday) to see if I could work around that misbehavior.

I got this error when installing the client: "Error opening file for writing: c:\\windows\system\mfc42.dll. Hit abort to abort installation, retry to retry writing the file, or ignore to skip this file." I tried retry, with no results, and then hit ignore. It finished installing, and then after putting in my id and password, it FAILED TO FIND THE SERVER.

Could this be the bug that's half-crippled my system since the summer? (Alliteration no extra charge.) Any ideas, folks?

MFC info...
EWW! not the dreaded MFC error of death!!!

Techy explanation: MFC42.dll can be found as part of the ODBC update from Msoft, and is crucial in form manipulations involving VB, esp. VB6.

Non-Techy explanation: go to microsoft's download site, and download the latest version of MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Components) and install it. It should have the newest version of MFC42 (Microsoft Foundation Classes v4.2) in it, and update your system. Or, download the latest Service Pack for your machine, and apply it.

Very techy solution: say screw it, and go to Linux... (of course, then nothing _else_ would work... but what does that matter?)

Re: MFC info...
This may be among the things I try tomorrow, in my Copious Spare Time. Thanks!

I am actually feeling MUCH better but have a lingering hacking cough which is more annoying than anything, except when I'm trying to sleep or hide it (i.e. in professional settings)

I hope you feel better soon, too. I felt better first thing this morning. Then I must have been turned into Wile E. Coyote, because the Road Runner ran me over with a truck. Bleargh.
